AI search optimization services help your business show up in, and get cited by, AI answers like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Gemini. You're mostly paying for four things: an audit of how AI tools see you now, regular content that answers real questions, technical fixes so AI crawlers can read your pages, and tracking of mentions and traffic. Prices run from about $500 to $50,000+ a month, according to one large agency's published ranges (SEO.com).
This guide is for site owners who aren't agency clients yet. It covers what you actually get, the price ranges agencies publish, the questions to ask (with good and bad answers), a 30 minute test to check a provider's proof, and a simple way to choose between an agency, a freelancer and software.
What AI search optimization services actually include
Most offers come down to the same five parts. Some providers sell all five, some sell one.
- AI visibility audit. Someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Mode the questions your customers ask. Then they record whether you appear, who appears instead, and which sources get cited.
- Prompt monitoring. The same set of questions gets checked again every week or month, so you can see changes over time.
- Citation and mention work. The goal is to get your brand named on the pages AI tools already trust: review sites, directories, industry lists, press, forums.
- Content. New pages and articles that answer specific questions clearly, plus updates to old pages so they stay current.
- Technical fixes. Making sure crawlers can reach your pages, the sitemap is clean, and pages load and render properly.
For reference, one large US agency splits its offer into an AI visibility audit, prompt monitoring, citation coverage and competitor tracking, across ChatGPT, AI Overviews, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity (SEO.com service page).
Notice what's missing from that list: the content itself. Monitoring tells you where you stand. It doesn't change anything. The pages and mentions do. So when you compare offers, check how much of the monthly fee pays for work that changes your site, and how much pays for reports.
SEO vs GEO vs AEO in plain English
Providers use three labels, often for the same work.
| Term | What it means | What the work looks like |
|---|---|---|
| SEO (search engine optimization) | Ranking in Google's normal results | Keyword research, content, internal links, technical fixes |
| GEO (generative engine optimization) | Getting used and cited in AI generated answers | Clear answer passages, sources, brand mentions on trusted sites |
| AEO (answer engine optimization) | Being the direct answer to a question | Question based headings, short definitions, FAQs |
In practice, these overlap a lot. Google says there are "no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary," and that you don't need new machine readable files or special markup to appear there (Google Search Central). So if a provider says AI search needs a secret technique that has nothing to do with SEO, treat that as a warning sign. Good AI search work is good SEO, plus extra attention to mentions and to answers that can be quoted.
That also answers a question people search a lot: you rarely need two separate agencies, one for SEO and one for AI. One provider who does solid SEO and understands citations is usually enough.
How much AI search optimization services cost
Real prices are hard to find, because most agencies say "contact us." Here's what's actually published.
- One large agency lists AI SEO services at $500 to $5,000+ per month, with higher tiers from $2,500 to $5,000 up to $50,000+ per month (SEO.com). That's a sales page, so read it as a range, not a quote.
- AI SEO Crew costs $49 per site per month for 50 researched articles, published on your site, with keyword research and Search Console tracking (AI SEO Crew pricing).
These aren't the same product. An agency retainer can include outreach, PR and custom strategy. Software covers the content and publishing part. Here's a fair comparison by option:
| Option | What you usually get | Typical cost basis | Best for | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AI search optimization agency | Audit, monitoring, content, outreach, reporting | Monthly retainer, published ranges above | Brands with budget that need PR and mentions at scale | Paying for reports more than for work |
| Freelancer | One skill done well: writing, technical SEO or outreach | Per project or per article, set by the freelancer | Small sites with one clear gap | Work stops when they get busy |
| Software or autopilot | Keyword research, researched articles, publishing, tracking | Flat monthly subscription | Local businesses, shops, SaaS, agencies with many client sites | You still own brand mentions and reviews |
| Do it yourself | Whatever you have time for | Your hours | Owners with time and a small site | Inconsistency, posts stop after a month |

Which option fits your site
- Local service business (clinic, plumber, accountant, salon): your biggest wins are answer pages for the questions customers ask before calling, plus reviews and directory listings. Use software for content, and handle your Google Business Profile and reviews yourself. An agency is rarely needed at the start.
- E-commerce or Shopify store: buying guides and comparison pages answer the "which is best for" questions people ask AI tools. Steady volume matters, so software or a freelance writer works well. Add an agency only if you need press coverage.
- SaaS or startup: comparison pages, docs and third party reviews carry a lot of weight. Use content software for the long tail, and do your own work on review sites and integration pages.
- Agency or freelancer with client sites: one tool you can run on many sites at a flat price per site beats paying a subcontractor per article. See AI SEO Crew for agencies.
- Larger brand with budget: an agency makes sense when you need outreach, digital PR and mentions across many publications. Make sure the content is actually included, not just the monitoring.
What to look for in an AI search optimization service
Whether you're comparing agencies, freelancers or tools, score each one on these points.
- Deliverables you can count. "Visibility work" isn't a deliverable. "Eight new articles and four updated pages a month" is.
- Content with sources. Every claim in the pages they write should link to where it came from. Ask for this: clear, checkable pages let your readers, and anyone quoting you, verify what you say.
- Freshness. Old pages should get updated on a schedule. One agency that sells the service reports that over 70% of the pages ChatGPT cites were updated in the last 12 months (Stackmatix). That figure comes from a seller, but the idea matches Google's own advice to keep content helpful and current.
- Classic SEO included. The same source reports a correlation of about 0.65 between ranking in Google's top 10 and being mentioned by AI models (Stackmatix). If your pages don't rank, AI tools see them less.
- Honest measurement. They should report AI referral traffic and leads, not just "share of voice" screenshots.
- Clear exit. You keep everything they publish if you cancel.
- Compliance with Google's rules. Lots of thin pages made only for search can hurt you. Read our explainer on scaled content abuse before you sign anything that promises hundreds of pages.
Questions to ask a provider, and answers that should worry you
Bring this list to every sales call. Good providers answer in specifics.
| Question | Good answer | Answer that should worry you |
|---|---|---|
| What exactly do I get each month? | A list with numbers: pages written, pages updated, mentions pursued | "A custom strategy" with no numbers |
| Can you guarantee I'll appear in ChatGPT? | "No. Nobody controls AI answers. Here's what we can influence." | "Yes, guaranteed in 30 days" |
| How is this different from SEO? | "It builds on SEO, with more work on citations and quotable answers" | "It's totally different, SEO is dead" |
| How do you measure results? | Search Console clicks, AI referral traffic in analytics, leads, a tracked prompt list | Only a dashboard score you can't check |
| Which AI tools do you track? | Named tools, with the prompts written down and shared | "All of them" with no list |
| Can I see a real result? | A live page you can open, and a prompt you can type yourself | Anonymous percentages with no starting point |
| What happens if I cancel? | Pages stay on your site, you keep everything | Content is removed or locked |
The second row matters most. Google decides which pages to show, and AI tools choose their own sources. A provider who guarantees placement is either guessing or misleading you. Red flags listed by agencies themselves include guaranteed visibility, wrong terminology, secret methods, the same plan for every client, no tracking tool, no authority building and no proof of past work (SEO.com).
The 30 minute test: check a provider's proof yourself
You can check any AI search optimization agency's claims before you pay. Here's how.
- Ask for three client pages and three prompts. Real URLs, and the exact questions they say those pages now appear for. (5 minutes)
- Type the prompts yourself in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google, while logged out or in a private window. Note who gets cited. Answers vary between sessions, so run each prompt twice. (10 minutes)
- Open the cited pages. Check that they're the client's pages, that they have sources, and that they were updated recently. (5 minutes)
- Check the provider's own site. Ask an AI tool a question in their own niche. A provider who isn't visible for their own service has nothing to show you. (5 minutes)
- Read the contract terms on cancellation and content ownership. (5 minutes)
If they can't give you step 1, you have your answer.
How to measure the results of AI search optimization
Keep it simple. Track three things every month.
- Search Console clicks and impressions. Traffic from Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode is counted inside the normal Performance report, under the Web search type (Google Search Central). There's no separate AI line, so watch the pages you worked on.
- AI referral traffic. Visits from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com show up as referrals in your analytics. Our guide on tracking ChatGPT traffic in Google Analytics 4 shows how to set up a report in a few minutes.
- Leads. Ask new customers where they found you, and add "ChatGPT or another AI tool" as a choice on your contact form.
On timing, expect months, not weeks. New pages need to be crawled, indexed and trusted before they rank or get cited. A provider who promises fast, fixed results is promising something nobody controls.
What you can do yourself without paying anyone
A lot of AI search optimization is basic work you can start this week.
- Check that crawlers can reach you. Make sure your robots.txt isn't blocking search engines or AI crawlers, and that your sitemap is in Search Console. Our free SEO checker flags indexing and crawler problems in a minute.
- Write down 20 real customer questions. Take them from emails, calls and reviews. Each one is a page.
- Answer in the first two sentences. Then explain. A short, direct answer is easy to read and easy to quote.
- Add sources. Link every number to where it comes from.
- Get mentioned. Claim your listings on the directories and review sites in your industry, and ask happy customers for reviews.
- Update old pages. Fix outdated facts and add new questions every few months.
Knowing what to do is the easy part. Doing it every week for a year is hard. That's where most owners stop, and it's the part worth paying for.
How AI SEO Crew handles this
AI SEO Crew covers the content and publishing side. Five AI agents find the real searches for your site, write researched articles with their sources, check every fact and link, publish on WordPress, Shopify, Webflow, Wix, Framer, GitHub or by webhook, and then resubmit your sitemap to Google and notify IndexNow. You get 50 articles a month for $49 per site, and your dashboard shows each article's clicks and impressions from Search Console. Frequently asked questions
What are AI search optimization services?
These services make your business more likely to appear in, and get cited by, AI answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews. The work usually includes an audit, prompt tracking, content, brand mentions and technical fixes. Most of it builds on normal SEO.
How much do AI search optimization services cost?
Published agency prices start around $500 a month and go past $50,000 a month for large programs, according to SEO.com. Freelancers price per project. Software that covers content and publishing costs much less: AI SEO Crew is $49 per site per month for 50 articles.
How long before AI search optimization shows results?
Expect several months. Pages need to be crawled, indexed and trusted first, and AI answers change from one session to the next. No honest provider can give you a fixed date or guarantee placement.
Do I need a separate agency for SEO and for AI search?
Usually not. Google says appearing in AI Overviews and AI Mode needs no special optimization beyond good SEO. One provider who writes clear, sourced pages and helps you earn mentions covers both.
