- WordPress
- Upload it to the root folder of your site (where wp-config.php is) with your host's file manager or SFTP.
- Webflow, Framer, Wix
- Check your platform's settings for custom root files. Not every builder allows them.
- Shopify
- Shopify doesn't let you upload files to the root of your domain. Look for an llms.txt app in the Shopify App Store.
Questions
What is llms.txt?
A plain-text Markdown file at the root of a website that lists its most useful pages with short descriptions, so language models can find the right content quickly. It was proposed in 2024 at llmstxt.org and is not an official web standard.
Do I need llms.txt to appear in ChatGPT or AI Overviews?
No. AI search tools find pages through their crawlers and search indexes, and Google says its AI features need no special file. llms.txt is cheap to add and some tools read it, but crawlable pages that answer questions clearly matter far more. See how to rank in ChatGPT.
What's the difference with robots.txt?
robots.txt tells crawlers what they may fetch. llms.txt suggests what is worth reading. They work together: llms.txt can't unblock a page that robots.txt blocks.
How often should I update it?
When you add or remove important pages. Generate it again here, review it, and upload the new version.
