How to rank in ChatGPT comes down to three conditions. ChatGPT has to be allowed to crawl your site, your pages have to be findable through the search indexes it uses, and they have to contain passages clear and specific enough to quote. Nobody can guarantee a citation, but each of those conditions is something you control.
It is worth the work. ChatGPT reached 900 million weekly users in February 2026 (TechCrunch), and when one of them asks which tool to use or how to fix a problem, the sources ChatGPT cites are the ones that get the click. Here is how those sources are chosen and six steps to become one of them.
How ChatGPT finds the pages it cites
ChatGPT search launched in October 2024. OpenAI says it "leverages third-party search providers, as well as content provided directly by our partners" (OpenAI). On top of that, OpenAI runs its own crawler, OAI-SearchBot, which "is used to surface websites in search results in ChatGPT's search features" (OpenAI's crawler documentation).
When a question needs fresh information, ChatGPT searches, reads the pages it finds and writes an answer with links to its sources. OpenAI's publisher FAQ is plain about eligibility: "Any public website can appear in ChatGPT search" (OpenAI Help Center).
The other assistants work the same way. Perplexity's crawler, PerplexityBot, is there to surface and link websites in its results (Perplexity docs). Google says there are "no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode" beyond being indexed and eligible for a snippet (Google Search Central). So the six steps below help with every AI answer engine at once.
Step 1: Let the search crawlers in
Open your robots.txt file (yoursite.com/robots.txt) and make sure nothing blocks the crawlers that power AI search. A minimal setup looks like this:
User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /
User-agent: PerplexityBot
Allow: /
User-agent: Googlebot
Allow: /
User-agent: Bingbot
Allow: /
Do not confuse OAI-SearchBot with GPTBot. GPTBot collects content that may be used to train OpenAI's models, and OpenAI says each setting is independent. You can block GPTBot to opt out of training and still appear in ChatGPT search. OpenAI also notes that search-related robots.txt changes can take about 24 hours to apply.
Check your hosting and CDN too. Some firewall and bot protection settings block AI crawlers by default, and Google's own advice for AI features starts with making sure crawling is allowed in both robots.txt and your CDN or hosting setup.
Step 2: Get indexed in more than one search engine
Because ChatGPT relies on search providers, a page nobody has indexed is a page it is unlikely to find.
- Google: submit your sitemap in Search Console and resubmit it when you publish. AI Overviews only draw on pages that are indexed and eligible for a snippet.
- Bing: add your site to Bing Webmaster Tools and use IndexNow, which tells Bing and other participating engines about new and updated pages as soon as you publish. Microsoft Copilot answers from Bing.
- Your own site: link every new page from at least one existing page, so crawlers reach it without waiting for the sitemap.
Step 3: Write passages an assistant can quote
Assistants lift short passages, so structure each page around the questions people ask.
- Answer first. Put the direct answer in the first two sentences under each heading, then explain.
- One question per heading. Phrase headings the way people type or say them: "How long does it take to…", "What does it cost to…".
- Be specific. Numbers, named sources, clear definitions and concrete steps are easier to cite than general advice.
- Keep it in text. Google recommends keeping important content in text form rather than inside images.
The evidence for this is good. Researchers from Princeton and IIT Delhi tested it in GEO: Generative Engine Optimization, presented at KDD 2024: adding citations, quotations and statistics to a page raised its visibility in generative engine answers by up to 40%.
Here is the difference in practice. A weak passage: "There are many factors that affect how often you should repot a plant." A quotable one: "Repot a monstera every one to two years, in spring, when roots start circling the pot." The second one answers the question on its own, so an assistant can cite it as is.
Step 4: Cover the whole topic, not one keyword
People rarely ask an assistant a single question. They follow up: what it costs, how it compares, what can go wrong. A site with one page on a topic shows up once. A site that answers the follow-ups keeps showing up.
Map the questions around what you sell and give each one its own page:
| Question type | Example for a project management tool |
|---|---|
| What is | What is a product roadmap |
| How to | How to build a roadmap for a new product |
| Cost | How much does project management software cost |
| Comparison | Gantt chart vs roadmap |
| Best for | Best way to plan a product launch |
| Mistakes | Common roadmap mistakes |
Then link those pages to each other and to your product pages. Our LLM SEO guide explains how the crew builds this kind of coverage automatically.
Step 5: Publish things worth citing
Assistants need a source for the specific facts they state. Give them one.
- Your own numbers: prices, timelines, results from your own work, with how you measured them.
- Clear pricing pages: "how much does X cost" is one of the most common questions, and a precise answer gets cited.
- Honest comparisons: criteria, trade-offs and who each option suits.
- Step-by-step guides: concrete steps with durations and checkpoints.
- Fresh dates: update pages when facts change, and show the date.
Step 6: Track your AI traffic
You cannot improve what you do not measure.
- ChatGPT: OpenAI adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to the links ChatGPT sends, so the visits appear in Google Analytics and similar tools.
- Other assistants: look for referrals from perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com.
- Manual checks: once a month, ask the assistants the ten questions you most want to be cited for and note which sources they use. Watch how the list changes as you publish.
What does not work
- Hidden text aimed at models. Instructions or keyword lists hidden from readers are a spam tactic, and they put your Google rankings at risk too.
- Counting on llms.txt. It does no harm, but Google says its AI features need no AI-specific text files, and assistants find your pages through crawlers and indexes.
- Mass-produced pages. Thousands of thin pages fall under Google's scaled content abuse policy. We cover where the line is in does Google penalize AI content.
- Invented statistics. A number without a source is a liability once an assistant repeats it to thousands of people.
How AI SEO Crew handles this
AI SEO Crew writes answer-first articles from live web research, links every fact to its source, adds an FAQ built from real questions and publishes to your site. After every article it resubmits your sitemap in Google Search Console and pings IndexNow, so search engines and the assistants that rely on them find the page quickly. Get your free keyword plan to see which questions your site should answer first.
Frequently asked questions
Can anyone guarantee that ChatGPT will cite my site?
No. ChatGPT decides which sources to cite for each question. What you control is the part that makes a citation likely: letting OAI-SearchBot crawl your site, getting your pages indexed, and publishing clear answers backed by sources.
Does blocking GPTBot remove my site from ChatGPT search?
No. GPTBot is OpenAI's training crawler. Visibility in ChatGPT search depends on OAI-SearchBot, and OpenAI says each robots.txt setting is independent, so you can opt out of training and still appear in search answers.
Is ranking in ChatGPT different from ranking on Google?
The foundations are the same: crawlable pages that answer real questions well. The difference is in the writing. Assistants quote short passages, so the answer has to come first, stand on its own and carry its source.
How do I know if ChatGPT sends me visitors?
ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to the links it sends, so those visits show up in Google Analytics and similar tools. You can also look for referrals from perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com.
Do I need an llms.txt file to rank in ChatGPT?
No. It is a proposed format, and Google says its AI features need no AI-specific text files. AI search tools reach your pages through crawlers and search indexes, so your pages and your robots.txt matter far more.
