How to rank in Perplexity comes down to three things. PerplexityBot has to be able to crawl your pages. Those pages have to be indexed and trusted. And each one needs short, sourced answers that Perplexity can quote word for word. Perplexity doesn't give you a rank. It cites you, with a numbered footnote under the answer that links to your page.
Most guides on this topic mix two kinds of advice. Some of it comes from Perplexity's own documentation. The rest comes from tool vendors who publish ranking weights with no source behind them. This guide keeps the two apart. Then it gives you a 4-week plan for a Shopify store, a WordPress site or a SaaS.
Cited is not ranked: how Perplexity picks its sources
Perplexity is an answer engine. When someone asks a question, it searches the web, reads a few pages and writes one answer, with footnotes pointing to the pages it used. There is no "position 4". Either your page is one of the footnotes or it isn't.
Only a few sources make it into each answer. SeoCrawl says an answer usually shows 3 to 8 sources, and Search Atlas puts the average at 5.28. Both figures come from third parties, not from Perplexity. Either way, you are competing for a handful of slots per question. So every page you want cited has to give the clearest answer on the web to one precise question.
The same writing habits get you quoted by ChatGPT and Google's AI Overviews. Our LLM SEO page shows how each post is built for AI answers: a direct answer under each heading, sourced facts and a clean structure.
How to rank in Perplexity in 2026: confirmed facts vs vendor claims
Before you change anything, it helps to know which advice comes straight from Perplexity and which is somebody's estimate.
| Claim | Who says it | Status |
|---|---|---|
| PerplexityBot surfaces and links sites in Perplexity results and is not used to train AI models | Perplexity docs | Official |
| You manage PerplexityBot with robots.txt | Perplexity docs | Official |
| Perplexity-User visits pages when a user asks a question and generally ignores robots.txt | Perplexity docs | Official |
| IP ranges are published so you can allow the bots in your firewall | Perplexity docs | Official |
| About 60% of Perplexity citations overlap with Google's top 10 | LinkGraph, Search Atlas | Third-party study |
| Reddit makes up 6.6% of Perplexity citations | RankAI | Third-party study |
| A "quality score" of 0.75 or a 30-minute freshness window | Search Atlas | No public source found |
| Exact percentage weights for ranking factors | Several vendor guides | No public source found |
Here's what to do with this. The crawler rules are facts, so act on them today. The overlap with Google is a strong sign that classic SEO still matters. Treat precise weights and scores as opinions until someone publishes the data behind them.
The five things that get a site cited by Perplexity
1. Let PerplexityBot in, in robots.txt and in your firewall
Perplexity states that you must allow PerplexityBot for your site to appear in its results. A basic rule looks like this:
User-agent: PerplexityBot
Allow: /
Robots.txt is only half the job. Many sites block bots at the firewall without knowing it, through Cloudflare bot protection, a hosting security plugin or a WAF rule. Perplexity recommends allowing its bots with rules that combine the user agent and the source IP. It publishes the IP lists at perplexitybot.json and perplexity-user.json. It also warns that the ranges change, so update your rules on a schedule.
The official user agent string is Mozilla/5.0 AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko; compatible; PerplexityBot/1.0; +https://perplexity.ai/perplexitybot). Search your server logs for it. If it never shows up, something is blocking it.
Once the door is open, decide which questions your pages should answer. Type your main topic into our free keyword generator to find the questions your customers type into Google. That gives you the list to work from before you rewrite your 5 pages in week 3.
2. Get indexed and ranked on Google and Bing
If roughly 60% of Perplexity citations also sit in Google's top 10 (LinkGraph), then a page that can't rank on Google has a weak chance in Perplexity too. Submit your sitemap in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, and fix pages stuck in "Discovered, currently not indexed". If your posts aren't indexed at all, start with why blog posts are not indexed by Google.
Put your main text in the HTML. A page that only shows its content after JavaScript runs is harder for any crawler to read.
3. Write answers Perplexity can lift as they are
Perplexity quotes passages, not whole pages. Make each passage stand on its own:
- Phrase headings as the questions your customers actually type.
- Answer in the first one or two sentences under each heading, then add detail.
- Put a number, a name or a source in the answer when you have one, and link to the source.
- Use a table when the reader is comparing options.
- Add a visible FAQ when the topic invites follow-up questions. Make sure your Article and FAQPage schema match the text on the page exactly.
Here is a made-up example for a plant shop.
Weak: "Repotting is an important part of plant care and depends on many factors."
Quotable: "Repot a monstera when roots come out of the drainage holes. Move up only one pot size."
The second version answers the question, tells the reader what to look for and what to do, and still makes sense pulled out of the page. That's the kind of passage that ends up as a footnote.
4. Be present where Perplexity already looks
Perplexity pulls from more than brand sites. RankAI puts Reddit at 6.6% of its citations. Third-party pages also show up often: "best of" lists, review sites, directories and business profiles. Here are useful moves that cost nothing:
- Answer real questions in the subreddits your customers use, as a person, not as an ad.
- Keep your Google Business Profile, G2, Capterra or Trustpilot profile accurate if those fit your market.
- Ask partners and suppliers to describe you correctly on their own sites.
5. Update for real, and date it honestly
Answers about prices, tools and rules can go stale. A real update means new facts, new examples or a corrected answer, plus a modified date that reflects the change. Moving the date forward without changing the content is fake freshness. It gives readers nothing, and nothing official says it helps.
How to rank in Perplexity AI in 4 weeks: a plan by site type
This plan fits a small team or a solo owner. RankAI estimates 3 to 4 weeks for on-site fixes and 1 to 2 quarters for off-site work. That's the vendor's own estimate, not measured data.
| Week | Shopify store | WordPress site | SaaS |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Access | Check robots.txt.liquid and any bot protection app for PerplexityBot | Check the SEO plugin's robots.txt and the security plugin or host firewall | Check Cloudflare or WAF rules and that docs pages are server rendered |
| 2. Indexing | Submit the sitemap in Search Console and Bing, fix unindexed collections and posts | Submit the sitemap, remove noindex on posts that should rank | Submit the sitemap, make sure help and comparison pages are indexable |
| 3. Rewrite 5 pages | Product care, sizing and shipping questions | Your top service and "how much does it cost" questions | "How to" use cases, integrations, "X vs Y" approaches |
| 4. Off-site and measure | Reviews, gift guides, niche subreddits | Local or industry directories, partner sites | Review platforms, community answers, integration partner pages |
To pick the 5 pages, start with the questions customers ask you by email, in chat or on sales calls. People ask Perplexity the same questions.
How to check if Perplexity cites your site
Perplexity has no official dashboard for citations, so build your own simple tracking:
- Write down 20 real questions your customers ask.
- Each week, ask them in Perplexity. Note whether your domain appears in the sources and which page is cited.
- In Google Analytics, filter referral traffic for perplexity.ai to see the visits it sends.
- Compare week over week. If a page was never cited and now is, you know which rewrite worked.
Keep your expectations realistic. SeoCrawl reports about 1 AI referral visit for every 100 visits from Google. For now, Perplexity adds to your Google traffic. It doesn't replace it.
Perplexity vs ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews
The basics are the same everywhere: crawlable pages, indexing and short sourced answers. The differences are mostly in the crawlers and where each assistant gets its results.
- Perplexity: PerplexityBot for search, Perplexity-User for live visits. Always shows its sources as numbered links.
- ChatGPT: separate OpenAI crawlers, covered step by step in how to rank in ChatGPT.
- Google AI Overviews and Gemini: built on Google Search, so Google indexing and rankings come first.
One well-built page can earn citations in all of them. You don't need a separate version for each assistant.
How AI SEO Crew handles this
Weeks 1 and 2 are one-time fixes. Week 3 never really ends: every new customer question needs a page with a direct, sourced answer, and that's the part most owners don't have time to write. That's what the crew does.
AI SEO Crew publishes 50 researched articles a month for $49 per site, to WordPress, Shopify or GitHub. Here is how it maps to the plan above:
- Access (week 1): this one stays on your side. Check your robots.txt and your firewall with the steps above.
- Indexing (week 2): after every article, the sitemap is sent to Google and IndexNow is pinged.
- Quotable answers (week 3): Scout finds the real Google searches your customers type, and Strategist picks the ones that bring customers. Writer researches each topic on the web and writes a direct answer under each heading, with its sources. Editor checks every fact and link before anything goes live, and adds internal links.
- Measure (week 4): your dashboard shows the clicks and impressions of each article from Search Console.
You choose autopilot, where articles publish as soon as the editor approves them, or review mode, where you approve each article yourself. You can cancel anytime, and the articles already published stay on your site.
Nobody can guarantee a Perplexity citation, and we don't. What you get is a steady flow of pages built the way answer engines quote them. See how each post is written for AI answers on our LLM SEO page. You can start with a free keyword plan and your first article. No card needed.
Frequently asked questions
Does traditional SEO still help you rank in Perplexity?
Yes. Third-party studies, including one by LinkGraph, find that about 60% of Perplexity citations overlap with Google's top 10. Indexing, useful content and links still matter. Perplexity adds one more requirement: passages that work as a quote on their own.
How long does it take to get cited by Perplexity after publishing?
Perplexity gives no official delay. Your page has to be crawled, indexed and judged better than the other options for a given question. Track your 20 questions weekly to see when it happens for your site.
Does schema markup help with Perplexity?
Perplexity has published nothing official on schema. Article and FAQPage markup that matches the visible text helps machines understand the page, so it's worth adding. Just don't expect markup alone to get you cited.
Can I stop Perplexity from crawling my site?
You can block PerplexityBot in robots.txt, but then your site won't appear in Perplexity results. Perplexity's documentation says Perplexity-User, which visits pages when a user asks a question, generally ignores robots.txt. To block it, you need a firewall rule.
What is the best way to rank in Perplexity AI?
Do three steps, in this order. Make sure PerplexityBot can reach you. Rewrite your most-asked customer questions as direct, sourced answers. Then earn mentions on Reddit, review sites and lists.
