Track ChatGPT Traffic in Google Analytics 4 (GA4)

October 28, 2026

To track ChatGPT traffic in Google Analytics, open Reports > Acquisition > Traffic acquisition and set the main dimension to "Session default channel group". GA4 now puts visits from ChatGPT and other assistants into a built-in channel called "AI Assistant". If you switch the dimension to "Session source", you can see chatgpt.com on its own.

That takes about five minutes. The rest of this guide covers what the built-in channel misses: older data, visits with no referrer and Google's own AI features. It also shows how to rebuild your history with a custom channel group, how to tell whether these visitors are worth anything, and which pages to improve once you know where AI sends people.

What the GA4 AI Assistant channel is

GA4 added an "AI Assistant" channel to its default channel group in May 2026. Search Engine Roundtable reported it on May 14 and named ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude as tracked sources.

Google's default channel group documentation explains how it works. When a visit's referrer matches Google's list of AI assistants, GA4 sets the medium to "ai-assistant" and the campaign to "(ai-assistant)". The channel then picks up every session with that medium. Google gives ChatGPT, Gemini, Deepseek, Copilot and Grok as examples.

Two points matter before you read the numbers:

  • Google's own AI features are left out. The same help page says the channel excludes AI Overviews and AI Mode. Clicks from those features count as Organic Search.
  • Google does not publish the full list. If an assistant you care about, Perplexity for example, still appears under Referral, the custom channel group further down will catch it.

If people do find you in AI answers, this channel is your first proof. Getting cited more often is a separate job. The LLM SEO page explains how we write content that AI assistants quote.

Step by step: find your ChatGPT visits in GA4

These steps work in any GA4 property. You don't need to set anything up.

  1. Open your GA4 property and go to Reports > Acquisition > Traffic acquisition. Vizup's guide uses the same path.
  2. Make sure the table's main dimension is Session default channel group. Look for the "AI Assistant" row.
  3. Pick a date range that starts after mid May 2026. Earlier dates won't show the channel (see the limits below).
  4. To see ChatGPT on its own, open the dimension dropdown above the table and pick Session source. Visits from ChatGPT show as chatgpt.com.
  5. To see both views together, click the "+" next to the dimension and add Session source as a secondary dimension. Then filter the channel column to "AI Assistant". You'll get one row per assistant.
  6. Add the columns that measure quality: Engaged sessions, Engagement rate and Key events.

On a small site, a row like "AI Assistant / chatgpt.com" with only a few sessions is normal. Watch how that number moves over the next few months. Its size today matters less.

Can you separate ChatGPT from Gemini in GA4?

Yes. The channel groups every assistant together, but each session keeps its source. To get a view you can come back to, build an Exploration:

  1. Go to Explore > Free form.
  2. Add these dimensions: Session default channel group, Session source, Landing page + query string.
  3. Add these metrics: Sessions, Engaged sessions, Engagement rate, Key events.
  4. Add a filter: Session default channel group exactly matches "AI Assistant".
  5. Drag Session source and Landing page into the rows.

The result is a table of which assistant sent people to which page. It's the most useful report in this guide, and the last section builds on it.

How to track ChatGPT traffic in Google Analytics before May 2026

The built-in channel won't help with older data. Vizup notes that GA4 does not reclassify sessions from before the launch. A custom channel group can help, because Google's custom channel group documentation says these groups can be applied to your reports retroactively.

Here's how to set one up:

  1. Go to Admin > Data display > Channel groups and create a new channel group. According to Google, standard properties can have 2 custom groups on top of the default one.

  2. Add a channel named "AI (custom)" with the condition Session source matches regex, using the pattern from SEOWorks:

    bard|chatgpt|openai|claude|copilot|gemini|perplexity|grok

  3. Use Reorder to move it above Referral. Google says traffic goes to the first channel whose definition it matches. If Referral comes first, your AI visits stay in Referral.

  4. Save. Then pick this group in the Traffic acquisition report instead of the default one.

One warning. A broad pattern like "gemini" or "copilot" can also match an unrelated site with that word in its domain. Check which sources the group catches every month and tighten the pattern if needed.

Why is the AI Assistant channel empty in GA4?

Most "I see nothing" problems come from a short list of causes. Go through them in this order.

What you see Likely cause What to do
No AI Assistant row at all Date range starts before the launch, or no visits yet Pick a range after mid May 2026. Ask ChatGPT a question your best page answers and check whether it cites you
Row shows zero for yesterday Data delay. SEOWorks says reports can take 24 to 48 hours to update Wait two days before you draw conclusions
chatgpt.com shows up under Referral Visits from before the launch, or a source missing from Google's list of assistants Use the custom channel group above
Visits you expected show up as Direct No referrer was passed. Vizup notes that mobile apps without a referrer escape tracking See the next section
A sudden drop in mid October 2026 A ChatGPT link tracking bug (details below) Compare with Direct for the same days
Visits from Google's AI answers are missing AI Overviews and AI Mode are excluded from the channel Look at Google organic traffic and Search Console instead
A new audience is empty Audiences can take up to 24 hours to fill, per SEOWorks Check again the next day
Nothing at all, on any channel The GA4 tag is missing or broken on some pages Check the tag on your landing pages (see the platform section)

Why does ChatGPT traffic show up as Direct?

GA4 can only spot an assistant when the visit comes with a referrer. If someone copies your URL from a ChatGPT answer and pastes it into a browser, the visit has no referrer and lands in Direct. The same goes for app links that don't pass one.

The October 2026 tracking bug

In October 2026, many ChatGPT links lost their tracking for about a week. Search Engine Journal reported that from October 9, inline links in ChatGPT answers arrived without the utm_source=chatgpt.com tag and without a referrer, so analytics tools counted them as Direct. Cedric Huesler, who first flagged the issue, said OpenAI confirmed to him on October 14 that it was a bug and that a fix began rolling out on October 15.

If your AI Assistant row dips during those days while Direct rises, your traffic probably didn't disappear. It was counted in the wrong place. Add a note to your reports so nobody misreads that week later.

Three checks that help

You can't fully fix missing referrers, but these checks help:

  • Look at the query string. In the Exploration, keep "Landing page + query string" as a dimension. ChatGPT has tagged its links with utm_source=chatgpt.com since at least June 2025, when Search Engine Roundtable reported the tag on more of its links. When the tag is there, you can see it even without a referrer.
  • Watch Direct on your informational pages. People rarely type the address of a how to guide into their browser. If Direct traffic to a guide climbs while its AI Assistant visits climb too, AI is probably sending more people than the channel shows.
  • Check your server logs or hosting analytics. Your host records every request, whether or not the GA4 script loaded. That includes visitors who block analytics.

For a full picture, read GA4 together with Search Console. GA4 shows visits from assistants. Search Console shows how your pages do in Google search, including the AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic that GA4 leaves out of the AI channel.

Where to add GA4 on WordPress, Webflow, Wix and Shopify

The AI Assistant channel only counts visits to pages that load your GA4 tag. If your blog template doesn't have the tag, your reports stay empty.

  • WordPress: connect GA4 with Google's Site Kit plugin, or add the tag to your theme header with a header code plugin. Pick one method so the tag doesn't load twice. If you run a WordPress site for a service business, the WordPress page shows how we publish to it.
  • Webflow: add the tag in Site settings, under custom code in the head section, then republish.
  • Wix: connect GA4 from the marketing integrations in your dashboard.
  • Shopify: connect GA4 with Google's own sales channel app rather than pasting code into the theme.

After any change, open one of your blog posts in a private window and check that the visit appears in GA4's Realtime report.

What to do with your AI traffic data

The number is only useful if it leads you to change something. Run this review once a month with the Exploration from earlier.

  1. List the landing pages that get AI visits. Say you run an accounting firm and two of your guides keep getting chatgpt.com sessions. Those are the pages on your site that AI already trusts.
  2. Compare engagement with your Google organic traffic. If AI visitors engage well but trigger no key events, the page answers the question without offering a clear next step. Add a link to the matching service page.
  3. Mark a key event on contact or signup. In Admin > Events, mark your form submission or booking event as a key event. The AI Assistant row will then show leads, not just visits.
  4. Strengthen the pages that already get cited. Put the answer in the first two sentences, add sources, and cover the follow up questions people ask. The guide on how to rank in ChatGPT explains what makes a page easy to quote.
  5. Fill the gaps. Ask ChatGPT and Perplexity the questions your customers ask. If they cite other sites and never yours, you need a page on that question. For Google's side, see how to appear in Google AI Overviews.
  6. Check that AI crawlers can read your site. If your robots.txt or a security setting blocks them, assistants can't read your pages, and that limits their chance to cite you. The free SEO checker runs this check on any URL.

How AI SEO Crew handles this

The crew writes every article so AI assistants can quote it easily. Each one opens with a direct answer, cites its sources and covers the follow up questions people actually ask. Articles go out on a steady schedule. Your dashboard shows each article's clicks and impressions from Search Console, and the AI Assistant row in GA4 shows whether assistants are sending visitors as well.

Once you can measure your AI visits, the next step is to give assistants more pages worth citing. Every month the crew publishes researched articles built for that, so you don't have to write them. Nobody can guarantee a citation, but you can make every page easier to quote.

Frequently asked questions

Does the GA4 AI Assistant channel change my past data?

No. GA4 does not reclassify sessions from before the channel launched in May 2026. For older data, create a custom channel group with a regex on Session source. Google says custom channel groups can be applied to your reports retroactively.

What is the difference between the AI Assistant and Referral channels?

Referral counts visits from links on other sites and apps. AI Assistant counts visits whose referrer matches Google's list of AI assistants, such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Deepseek, Copilot and Grok, and GA4 sets their medium to "ai-assistant", according to Google's channel documentation. Before the launch, those visits were counted as Referral.

Why did my ChatGPT traffic drop in October 2026?

Most likely it was a tracking bug, not a real drop. From October 9, many ChatGPT links lost their utm_source=chatgpt.com tag and their referrer, so GA4 counted the visits as Direct. Search Engine Journal reports that OpenAI called it a bug and that a fix began rolling out on October 15.

Does GA4 track traffic from Google AI Overviews and AI Mode?

Not in the AI Assistant channel. Google's documentation says the channel excludes AI Overviews and AI Mode, so those clicks count as Organic Search. Use Search Console to see how your pages do in Google search, AI features included.
